Snowman Rice Balls (Jumeokbap) for Christmas! https://kimchimari.com/snowman-rice-balls-jumeokbap-christmas/ https://kimchimari.com/snowman-rice-balls-jumeokbap-christmas/#comments Sat, 03 Dec 2022 18:03:58 +0000 https://kimchimari.com/?p=10551 Snowman Rice Balls Christmas[caption id="attachment_10553" align="aligncenter" width="833"]Snowman Rice Balls Christmas Treats Snowman Rice Balls Christmas Treats[/caption]

Snowman Rice Balls?? Yes, it's you favorite Jumeokbap (주먹밥) in the shape of a snowman! I love making snowman in the winter, don't you? I love living in California but I do miss the snow here during the holiday time. I know this is a pretty last minute Christmas recipe idea but better late than never, right? And these rice balls really don't need a lot of time or special ingredients so hopefully it's something you can whip up, even if it's last minute. It would be great as a rice substitute for dinner or even as a snack for your children during your Christmas holidays! And you can have some fun making these with your little ones.

For a while now, I have been trying to come up with something fun to cook for Christmas or the holidays. I have searched through all my Korean cookbooks for dessert ideas but as you know there are no special Christmas foods in the Korean cuisine. So.. instead of desserts, I decided to make these cute Snowman Rice Balls (Jumeokbap)!! ⛄️  ❄️ ⛄️ The great thing about these special Snowman holiday theme rice treats is that it's actually not high calorie or too sweet but something that you can eat with your everyday meal. I'm sure you can make even more cute designs than mine here but not too bad, right? haha

The stuffing for these snowman rice balls were taken from my Jumeokbap post so please check that recipe on how to make the spam and ground beef stuffing. Although I have not included in this recipe, you can also stuff the rice balls with tuna+mayo, chopped kimchi, sauteed anchovies (myeolchi bokkeum), salmon flakes.. the possibilities are endless.

This post is a first for me in that I am asking you to watch the video for the details of how it is done rather than read my detailed recipe because trying to explain how you make the snowman would be way too hard to do with just words and pictures.

Multigrain Rice Instant Pot Recipe (Japgokbap) https://kimchimari.com/multigrain-rice-instant-pot-japgokbap-recipe/ https://kimchimari.com/multigrain-rice-instant-pot-japgokbap-recipe/#comments Wed, 24 Oct 2018 17:09:45 +0000 https://kimchimari.com/?p=12738 Closeup of multigrain rice cooked in pink striped bowlMultigrain Rice Instant Pot recipe is the perfect solution for making what usually takes a long time to cook in a regular pot or even in one of those fancy pressurized Korean rice cooker. Instant Pot reduces the cooking time by as much as 40% (compared to pressurized Korean rice cooker).

[caption id="attachment_12795" align="aligncenter" width="640"]multigrain rice instant pot cooked in pink striped bowl on white background Multigrain Rice Instant Pot Recipe - Korean Japgokbap[/caption]

Multigrain rice or Japgokbap was not an easy rice to make in the old days before the invention of pressurized rice cookers or other cookers like the Instant Pot. Because even after soaking the individual grains and beans for hours, our moms had to pre-cook the beans, especially the Adzuki beans. Then the grains and beans were often added at different times during the cooking process.

I think partly because of how time consuming it was to cook the Korean Multigrain Rice, in previous generations Japgokbap was a special treat that was prepared only on special occasions like on the eve of First Full Moon festival (Jeongwol Daeboreum 정월대보름). You can read more about the festival in my Multigrain Rice Recipe post.

In recent years, especially with the knowledge that anything that's whole grain and less processed is healthy, Japgokbap has become very popular is preferred by many Korean adults with diabetes, weight problems and other health issues.

Ogokbap 오곡밥 or 5 grain rice is a special kind of Japgokbap that's traditionally enjoyed on the day of the first full moon. The first full moon or Jeongweol Daeboreum 정월대보름 is a traditional Korean holiday that is January 15th in the lunar calendar.

FYI, for 2019,  Jeongweol Daeboreum will be Februrary 19th. Every year, on this day or the night before, Koreans traditionally enjoy this healthy Korean multigrain rice or Ogokbap and various namuls. Koreans prepare a table of this special 5 grain rice and namuls as offering to the heavens to pray for good harvest that coming fall.

Korean Purple Rice or Black Rice (Heukmi Bap) https://kimchimari.com/korean-purple-rice-heukmibap-black-rice/ https://kimchimari.com/korean-purple-rice-heukmibap-black-rice/#comments Thu, 20 Sep 2018 02:50:45 +0000 https://kimchimari.com/?p=12566 Purple Rice close up in green ceramic rice bowlKorean Purple Rice usually refers to Korean rice that is cooked with black rice which gives it the pretty purple color. Besides giving the rice this beautiful purple hue, black rice adds extra nutty flavor and has great health benefits.

[caption id="attachment_12590" align="aligncenter" width="640"]Korean purple rice in bowl with silver spoon and chopsticks Korean Purple Rice (HeukmiBap) or Black Rice[/caption]

What is Korean purple rice?

Korean purple rice is when black rice (aka forbidden rice) is cooked with white rice which then results in a purple color overall and thus called "purple rice" by many. It is actually not a direct translation but is something that just caught on with people.

NOTE - people may also confuse purple rice with what Koreans call Japgokbap (잡곡밥) which is multi-grain rice. This rice also has similar purple color but includes not just the black rice but other grains and beans like red and black beans, sorghum, garbanzo beans and millet.
