Snowman Rice Balls (Jumeokbap) for Christmas! https://kimchimari.com/snowman-rice-balls-jumeokbap-christmas/ https://kimchimari.com/snowman-rice-balls-jumeokbap-christmas/#comments Sat, 03 Dec 2022 18:03:58 +0000 https://kimchimari.com/?p=10551 Snowman Rice Balls Christmas[caption id="attachment_10553" align="aligncenter" width="833"]Snowman Rice Balls Christmas Treats Snowman Rice Balls Christmas Treats[/caption]

Snowman Rice Balls?? Yes, it's you favorite Jumeokbap (주먹밥) in the shape of a snowman! I love making snowman in the winter, don't you? I love living in California but I do miss the snow here during the holiday time. I know this is a pretty last minute Christmas recipe idea but better late than never, right? And these rice balls really don't need a lot of time or special ingredients so hopefully it's something you can whip up, even if it's last minute. It would be great as a rice substitute for dinner or even as a snack for your children during your Christmas holidays! And you can have some fun making these with your little ones.

For a while now, I have been trying to come up with something fun to cook for Christmas or the holidays. I have searched through all my Korean cookbooks for dessert ideas but as you know there are no special Christmas foods in the Korean cuisine. So.. instead of desserts, I decided to make these cute Snowman Rice Balls (Jumeokbap)!! ⛄️  ❄️ ⛄️ The great thing about these special Snowman holiday theme rice treats is that it's actually not high calorie or too sweet but something that you can eat with your everyday meal. I'm sure you can make even more cute designs than mine here but not too bad, right? haha

The stuffing for these snowman rice balls were taken from my Jumeokbap post so please check that recipe on how to make the spam and ground beef stuffing. Although I have not included in this recipe, you can also stuff the rice balls with tuna+mayo, chopped kimchi, sauteed anchovies (myeolchi bokkeum), salmon flakes.. the possibilities are endless.

This post is a first for me in that I am asking you to watch the video for the details of how it is done rather than read my detailed recipe because trying to explain how you make the snowman would be way too hard to do with just words and pictures.

Korean Street Toast (Gilgeori Toast 길거리 토스트) https://kimchimari.com/korean-street-toast/ https://kimchimari.com/korean-street-toast/#comments Tue, 07 Apr 2020 05:18:52 +0000 https://kimchimari.com/?p=15580 Korean Street Toast SandwichKorean Street Toast is a grilled egg omelette sandwich filled with crunchy veggies and cheese.  It's a wonderful medley of flavors - buttery, savory, crunchy and even is a bit salty and sweet. It also has great chewy and crunchy texture in addition to the gooey melted cheese so it's bound to satisfy all your cravings!

[caption id="attachment_15586" align="aligncenter" width="1000"]korean street toast stacked on plate with green pattern Korean street toast sandwich[/caption]

This Korean Street Toast was most popular when I was in college, it was a filling toast that you could get from street carts on your way to work or school. I didn't get to have it too many times though because, for some reason, this was not a food that many girls ate on the street. Usually, only men ate these. I guess the sandwich was too hearty for dainty girls.. lol..

Also, it didn't help that I was a very shy girl (I'm still shy and is the reason why I don't like to show my face on pictures or videos) back then and I just couldn't get myself to go near the street cart to buy the sandwich. And even if I had the courage to buy it, how would I eat it on the street?

I probably missed a lot of yummy street food because of my shyness.. haha..

In Korean, this is called Gilgeori Toast (길거리 토스트), this filling and flavorful breakfast sandwich has mostly disappeared for the last 20 some years and have now become popular again. But of course, with a modern twist - like adding mozzarella cheese (which was very scarce when I was in college). Now, Koreans love to add mozzarella cheese to just about everything from tteokbokki to hotteok.

Anyway, this came to mind because I was trying to think of something that would go well with Dalgona Coffee which has been the latest craze in this tough time of isolation with so many being confined in their homes. I look forward to the day when all this will be in the past and just a memory.

Vegetable Tempura https://kimchimari.com/vegetable-tempura/ https://kimchimari.com/vegetable-tempura/#comments Fri, 07 Jun 2019 06:31:55 +0000 http://koreanathome.wordpress.com/?p=622 Perilla or Shiso and Ssukat leaves tempura on paper lined trayDo you like a good crispy Vegetable Tempura? I DO!! Did you think making really crispy and airy tempura at home was IMPOSSIBLE?? Wrong. Use my tempura recipe and you can make perfectly crispy and light tempura at home every time.

[caption id="attachment_14155" align="aligncenter" width="800"]Perilla or Shiso and Ssukat leaves tempura on paper lined tray Vegetable Tempura (Shiso/Perilla leaves)[/caption]

So... there's something that I have never figured out. Why can't most Japanese restaurants in the US serve Tempura that is really crispy, light and airy?? I mean, there are some that are decent but I am always disappointed than not when I order tempura at restaurants.

Now,  I must say it took me years to perfect my vegetable tempura recipe as this is not something I learned from my mother or my mother-in-law. This was through many years of trial and error. And also because I happen to see a Japanese restaurant chef make tempura at our home when I was little..more on that later.

Key for Perfect Vegetable Tempura

In my opinion, there are 3 things that are key for perfect Vegetable Tempura: oil temperature, batter and how you coat your vegetables with the batter.

Best Korean Potato Salad (Gamja Salad) https://kimchimari.com/korean-potato-salad/ https://kimchimari.com/korean-potato-salad/#comments Thu, 23 May 2019 05:33:44 +0000 https://kimchimari.com/?p=14038 Korean potato salad served as a scoop on red bowl with grated egg yolk on topKorean Potato Salad (Gamja Salad) is somewhat similar to the classic American potato salad but different because of the extra crunch and freshness added with apples and cucumbers. One of the most commonly served side dishes at Korean BBQ restaurants, it is the perfect accompaniment to rich grilled meats like Galbi and Bulgogi.

[caption id="attachment_14046" align="aligncenter" width="800"]korean potato salad on black dish on wooden table Korean potato salad (gamja salad) side dish[/caption]

Korean Potato Salad or Gamja Salad (감자 샐러드 or 사라다) is, yes, not a classic traditional Korean dish but as long as I can remember it was part of Korean cuisine. Perhaps it was introduced to Koreans via the US Army base after they settled in Korea after the war... but it's just something that Koreans love to have - as a side dish but also in a sandwich (although it's done a little bit differently for that) as Gamja Salad Sandwich.

When I think of this dish, my memories take me back to my college days. At Ewha Womans University where I attended college, we had a huge cafeteria and their menu changed daily and I was not a huge fan of their food (as it usually goes with any college cafeteria.. haha) but if there was one thing that took me and my friends back to the cafeteria almost every day was their Gamja Salad!!!

Can you believe it?? 😂🤣My friends and I used to say..

"Hmm..just not sure what they put in the salad but it's like I am addicted to it!!"

10 Best Korean Pancakes https://kimchimari.com/10-korean-pancakes-recipes/ https://kimchimari.com/10-korean-pancakes-recipes/#comments Mon, 08 Oct 2018 13:52:02 +0000 https://kimchimari.com/?p=12516 10 Korean Pancakes Savory to Sweet

Best Korean pancakes from savory to sweet, featuring classic Korean flavors and ingredients like kimchi, gochujang, chive, and buckwheat. Enjoy them for breakfast, as side dishes to any meals, or as snacks.

[caption id="attachment_12550" align="aligncenter" width="640"]10 Korean Pancakes Savory to Sweet 10 Korean Pancakes from Savory to Sweet[/caption]

10 Best Korean pancakes for you to enjoy any time of the day. These are some of my favorites to whip up as banchan, as snacks or appetizer or even as something to enjoy with Korean makgeolli. When you need just one more banchan for dinner, try making one of the savory pancakes below.

I've added the time and quick list of ingredients so you can quickly choose which one to make. First, a little note about the names. What Koreans know as "jeon 전", "buchimgae 부침개" or "tteok 떡" are commonly translated as "pancake" in English, although each word has some differences.

Jeon means anything that is coated in flour and egg then pan-fried in oil. Buchimgae refers to what can be called as fritters; they usually are mixed batters that are spread out like pancakes and pan-fried in oil. Tteok usually refers to rice cakes but in some instances, although a few, they are used to refer to similar dishes to Buchimgae such as in Bindaetteok and Jangtteok.

In a typical Korean pancake recipe, the main ingredient is generously spotlighted to allow the flavor to take center stage. For example, there's the kimchi pancake, chive pancake, mung bean pancake, and gochujang pancake. You get the idea! These pancakes are served as side dishes in a meal, and are also popular as snacks, usually with makgeolli.

These Korean pancakes are unlike the classic Western breakfast pancake that you might have in mind. Many of them are savory but I also have a couple of sweet recipes that will change up your usual pancake routine. Try them all from the collection below!!
